Gestalt psychology was an early school of thought that like structuralism and functionalism involved research on consciousness; most frequently on the areas of perception, learning, and problem solving. The word gestalt refers to form, or shape, or organization and Gestalt psychologists emphasized the organizational processes, rather than the content of behavior. Gestalt influence can be seen today is in the Gestalt organizational or grouping principles. Gestalt psychologists proposed principles for how the mind’s perceptual system “glues” raw sensations together in particular ways in what are known as Gestalt principles or laws of grouping. Gestalt grouping principles show how the mind brings order and form to the basic sensations our minds receive. Current cognitive psychologists draw somewhat on Gestalt ideas, particularly in relation to questions of vision and information processing. Gestalt principles for grouping and organizing perceptions have numerous modern practical applications such as website, product, or architectural design.
